Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company (WVIC) has a rewarding opportunity to work out of our maintenance facility in Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin. WVIC oversees and operates a network of 21 storage reservoirs containing 24 dams and more than 60 lakes that collectively comprise WVIC’s Wisconsin River Headwaters Project in the Central/Northern Wisconsin River Basin. WVIC is a private company chartered by the Wisconsin State Legislature in 1907 and the reservoir system is regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). This position participates in the maintenance of WVIC’s dams, dikes, equipment, and facilities. The position will have the opportunity to work as a part of a team and individually on a variety of projects utilizing skills in carpentry, electrical/mechanical solutions, heavy equipment operation, and much more.

This position is also eligible for a discretionary bonus plan. Job Responsibilities:

Core Job Duties

• Prioritize a safe work environment and safe work habits of self and others on the maintenance staff by adhering to and improving all WVIC safety protocols.

• Assign crews and personnel to projects and keep work on schedule.

• Document projects with photos and upload to content management systems.

• Complete and submit written project summaries when necessary.

• Select and purchase suitable materials and supplies to achieve desired project outcomes at minimum cost.

• Recordkeeping for Maintenance Shop, approve time sheets when necessary.

• Maintain a working inventory of materials and supplies.

• Maintenance and repair of equipment and updating of logbooks.

• Utilize mobile apps and databases to document various maintenance activities.

• Thaw and clear dam gates and adjust openings in winter.

• Be proficient in, or willing and able to learn the following trades: welding, carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, concrete work and/or masonry work, operating heavy equipment, earthwork, driving heavy trucks, and basic mechanic duties.

• Operate pickup truck with snowplow to clear remote sites; shovel.

• Participate in "steaming” or "de-icing” of dam gates in adverse conditions.

• Troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment related to dams in collaboration with other maintenance personnel and external contractors.

• Work over/near water frequently to complete tasks, sometimes from a boat.

• Perform shop inspections utilizing safety and compliance tracking software.

• Maintain valid CDL driver's license with trailer endorsement.

• Train and provide instruction to LTE’s and new maintenance employees.

• Demonstrate mechanical aptitude, problem solving skills, and willingness to continue learning and utilizing emerging technologies and techniques.

• Ability to visualize the desired outcomes of a project, and the intermediate steps, materials, and processes that need to be taken to reach those desired outcomes.

Safety Duties:

• Adhere to all established safety practices and procedures, prioritizing safe completion of tasks.

• Continually assess facilities and procedures for safety improvements and report suggestions to manager(s) to reduce risk and improve processes.

• Attend trainings and presentations on safety matters for maintenance staff as needed.

• Identify and address all site maintenance and safety issues at all WVIC owned facilities in coordination with all WVIC Staff.

• Install new safety equipment and update public safety devices.

• Ability to learn and become proficient in the use of EHS Insight safety and compliance software system.


Job Qualifications:

High school graduate and college training or equivalent to 5 years’ experience in maintenance, construction or engineering technology. Aptitude to grow and continue to learn. Creative problem-solving skills to reach desired outcomes. Ability to read blueprints and work drawings. Possess working knowledge and proficiency, or willingness and ability to learn construction trades including, earthwork, heavy equipment operation, welding, carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, concrete and masonry work. Laser level elevation experience desirable but not required. Proven experience operating and maintaining construction equipment and vehicles. Project management experience desired. Ability to direct and supervise LTE’s and maintenance workers. Ability to work with the public. Self-starter with experience working unsupervised. Willingness to work extra hours and be on call during emergency periods. Ability to collect data and prepare written documentation. Hold a valid driver’s license and CDL license (or ability to obtain CDL after being hired). Industrious and resourceful. Willingness to work in inclement weather. Experience working on and around dams and waterways is desirable but not required. Must be comfortable working at heights above water.


The hourly rate for this position ranges from $25-$40 per hour. The hourly range represents the anticipated low and high end of WVIC’s hourly range for this position. Actual wage will vary and will be based on various factors, such as skill, experience, and qualification for the role.
